Addiction affects every aspect of your life, from the quality of your personal relationships to your ability to maintain steady employment. Whether you’re struggling with drug addiction or alcoholism, it’s possible to regain control of your life and wake up excited about what each new day has to offer. Virtue at the Pointe offers comprehensive addiction treatment in Portland, ensuring you have the support you need to abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Substance Abuse Treatment

Virtue at the Pointe offers treatment for addictions to alcohol, prescription medications and illicit substances, which are drugs that are illegal to possess or use. Examples of illicit substances include heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. Our addiction treatment programs are highly customized based on your physical and emotional needs, ensuring every patient receives the right therapies and support.

Dual Diagnosis Mental Health Services

Many patients come to Virtue at the Pointe with a dual diagnosis, which means they have an addiction to drugs or alcohol and at least one other behavioral health issue that needs to be addressed with therapy and/or medication. It’s not unusual for people who struggle with substance use to also have mental health issues in need of treatment, mainly because there are similar risk factors for substance use disorder and other behavioral health conditions. For example, living in an abusive environment can increase the risk for addiction and depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s also common for people with mental health conditions to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol.

For best results, it’s important to treat the addiction and the mental health disorder together. Treating both conditions at the same time reduces the risk of relapse and ensures you have the tools and support you need to recover.

Trauma and Addiction

A history of trauma is one of the most significant risk factors for drug and alcohol addiction. Trauma may also contribute to the development of a mental health condition, such as major depressive disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Virtue at the Pointe offers several types of therapy to help patients heal.

EMDR

Eye-movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of psychotherapy often used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, depression and behavioral addictions. It’s different from other types of therapy because it doesn’t require the patient to discuss their trauma in detail. Instead, a therapist asks the patient to focus on a specific event and think about the negative beliefs and images associated with that event. After a set of sounds, taps or side-to-side eye movements, the therapist instructs the patient to note what’s come to mind. The sets continue until the images or beliefs related to the event are less disturbing to the patient.

DBT

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, but it has shown promise in helping patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. During a DBT session, the therapist aims to help the patient live in the present, learn how to tolerate frustration and other negative emotions, regulate their emotions more effectively and communicate in a respectful way without violating their personal boundaries.

CBT

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most common treatment methods for addiction and other mental illnesses. This therapeutic approach is centered on the idea that psychological problems often stem from faulty patterns of thinking or behavior. With CBT, a therapist aims to help the patient overcome these harmful patterns and develop effective coping skills.

Medication Assistance

At Virtue at the Pointe, every treatment plan is customized to meet the specific needs of the patient. For some patients, a customized treatment plan includes medication to relieve the symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health disorders. Easing the symptoms of these conditions makes it easier for patients to focus during therapy sessions and other rehabilitation activities, improving the chances of a successful outcome.

Addiction Treatment for Veterans

No matter where or when they served, veterans have an increased risk of developing substance use disorder, PTSD and other mental health conditions. The risk increases for veterans who served in active combat as active duty exposes service members to both physical and psychological trauma.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration conducts an annual survey to gain insight into the problem of substance use among veterans. In 2019, approximately 26% of veterans surveyed struggled with illicit drugs, nearly 81% struggled with alcohol use and just under 8% struggled with both illicit drugs and alcohol. Our staff members have extensive experience helping veterans heal from service-related trauma and regain control of their lives.
